Diary Dates: Must-book August events in Suffolk and Cambridgeshire
Published: 06:12, 06 August 2024
Holidaying at home? You can go to the circus, see the fens at sunset and attend an immersive arts festival. . .
Directed and produced by pro-gymnast Irina Archer, who’s worked with the famed Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, Golden Age will feature fabulous costumes, classic clowning and some truly jaw-dropping stunts from the largely Ukrainian troupe.
Promising “an immersive experience where the performers go all out to put on an extravaganza”, the Big Top will host two shows a day from August 15 to 19 and tickets start at £10.

Summer Nights, National Trust Sites
A chance to see the National Trust’s oldest nature reserve lit by golden summer evening sun, Wicken Fen is marking its 125th year by opening late on Thursdays throughout August. Take a stroll along the boardwalk, listening to the birds chatter and insects hum, then sit and take in the sweeping fenland views while enjoying cold drinks and hot pizza from a visiting food van (serving 5-8pm on Thursdays and 5.30-7.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays - see nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/cambridgeshire/wicken-fen).
Also making the most of the light nights, Wimpole Estate, the National Trust property near Royston, is hosting a special Sunset Series this summer. It includes a pair of ‘folk picnics’ - an invitation to eat, drink and dance to live folk music in the gardens on August 24 (tickets should be booked - see nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/cambridgeshire/wimpole-estate/events).
Held in the Terrace Units at Waterbeach Barracks, atmospheric relics of the Cold War, the festival also features a programme of free drop-in workshops: aimed at all ages and interests, topics include drawing, printmaking, yoga and percussion.
Running 10am to 5pm every Saturday and Sunday from August 24 to September 8, the pop-up café is also, say organisers, “always a highlight”, with its menu of homemade cakes and bakes and, if the weather’s sufficiently clement, lovely outside seating.
Entry is free. Full details at summeratthebeach.art
