Shoot: Faultless looks for Wimbledon fortnight

Wimbledon is back! To celebrate, Velvet’s contributing fashion editor Rohiny Belani takes to Jesus Green tennis courts in Cambridge to model some spectator chic

As with countless other major sporting events, last year’s Wimbledon was cancelled by coronavirus. If you’re lucky enough to have tickets to this month’s All England Club tournament, it’s time to pull out all the fashion stops. . .

Yes, the matches might be the main event, but outfit-spotting in the green stands has become a great spectator sport. And while there isn’t a strict dress code, unless you’re taking a seat in the royal box, it’s a brilliant chance to dress up.

You don’t have to go full on frock-and-fascinator - this isn’t Ladies’ Day at Royal Ascot - but do be warned that the TV cameras do tend to pan around Centre Court when the players are towelling themselves down.

Go Bright

The best way to stand out from the crowd is with a bolt-from-the-yellow shade. Even when you’re not actively seeking the spotlight, the spotlight will find you in this colour. Whether it’s starting a new fashion trend or being the first to hit the dance floor, the term wallflower doesn’t tend to enter your vocabulary. You’ve got confidence to spare and, let’s be honest, you’d rather be called extra than boring.

Go Knit

When it comes to combining courtside chic with courtside comfort, Laura Theiss’ short-sleeved summer knit dress is the perfect solution. The soft, comfy clothing movement has taken off and, in fact, we’re already seeing a handful of designers send clingy knits down the runway at their Fall 2021 collections. It seems this is a trend that’s here to stay.

Go Simple

A jumpsuit with a statement belt or sunglasses is a masterclass in how to do stealth chic in the stands. It pays to remember that only your top half will be seen, so accessorizing is key.

Go Print

For an edgier take on spectator chic, pair a clash of prints with a pair of cool sunnies.
